What does price per 1,000 board feet (MBF) mean?
Lumber is quoted per MBF, which is 1,000 board feet. One board foot is a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 12 inches long. To get a price per board foot, divide the MBF price by 1,000. A nominal 8-foot 2x4 holds about 5.33 board feet, so its lumber-only value is the MBF price multiplied by 5.33 and divided by 1,000.
